ocr: SOHO RESULTS HEATINGTHE SUNS ATMOSPHERE Spaghetti-like tangles of magnetic field lines, rising from the Sun's surface, ap- pear to release the energy that heats the otmosphere to more than a million degrees CI- far hotter than the visible surface. Scientists interprefing results from the EIT and MDI instruments describe this phenomenon as a magnetic carpet that renews itself in less than two days. As magnetic loops form and dissipate, they deposit energy in the atmosphere.
